OUR CROWN HILL Question #1: Favorite Places

Thanks everyone for answering our first question, “What is your favorite place to spend time in Crown Hill? and why?”

Twenty-four neighbors shared their favorite spot in Crown Hill.  That’s about a 10% response rate, which is very good for an email survey.    Many couldn’t resist and mentioned more than one place, including seasonal preferences such as, Sound View wading pool in the summer; Bento Sushi in the winter; or baseball season at Whitman & Crown Hill ball fields.  Read on for a summary of familiar favorites and possible new discoveries. Crown Hill denizens like their parks as they topped the list with 18 mentions.  Crown Hill Park/school took the lead as either a current favorite, ” … with my 2 year old son. He loves running around playing on all the different things; I love that there’s so much space and I don’t have worry about him running out into the street.”  It’s also been fun to watch him develop; he can finally go down the slide all by himself!” or a future favorite, “When the new park across from Dick’s is finished with the skatepark feature that will be my favorite place on Crown Hill…”  and  “We love playing frisbee in the field and we’re hoping there will still be a place to play when the park is developed.”

First runner up for parks was Carkeek Park, “It has it all! Lots of grassy areas for playing frisbee; grills for cooking out; hiking trails; and a beach.” Others mentioned nature and watching the salmon in the fall and apple blossoms in the spring.  Also mentioned was Golden Garderns and the track track at Whitman, “The running surface is resilient, the views are lovely, the place is peaceful, and there are always people coming and going nearby who are enjoying themselves with soccer, tennis, dog walking, etc.”

Crown Hill has a history of park activism. Of note is Crown Hill Glen, “… on a hot day at Crown Hill Glen – a little park at the intersection of 19th Ave NW and NW 89th.  It was 4 lots full of blackberry bushes 10 years ago, but we got together as a neighborhood and transformed it into a lovely woodland retreat.”

Crown Hill has many independent restaurants and business that we can walk too!  Favorites included, “Swanson’s Nursery!   Besides successfully draining my checking account to support a local business, their fabulous containers inspire my gardening and help me create a beautiful personal space and a more beautiful neighborhood.” And of course Dick’s  “My 10 yr old son would say Dick’s Drive In.”  Also on the list were Honoré, a bakery at 70th and 14th NW, Luisa’s Mexican Grill (6th and Holman), Taki’s Mad Greek Restaurant (15th and 85th), and “The Acorn. The people there are nice, the atmosphere is relaxed, the food is good, and they make the best Mojito’s in the summer!” Acorn Eatery is at Holman and Mary.

Crown Hill folks love their homes and yards as special places of retreat and relaxation, “My backyard. It is quiet and sunny and comfortable;”  “In my yard with my kids, chickens, dog, cats…hubby;” or “…my deck, looking west toward the sound.”

And yes  “…visiting the sheep…”
