Here's what the Humane Society of the United States says:

Discourage garbage raiding by placing cans at the curb on the day of pick-up rather than the night before. Place cans inside a shed or garage between pick-ups. You may also secure the lids with bungee cords, rope tie-downs, or weights. Raccoons are attracted to birdseed and suet, and can cause considerable damage to garden fruits and vegetables, particularly grapes and corn. Garden plundering often occurs right before the foods are ready to be picked, so extra vigilance at these times (chasing animals away and using lights or radios to create disturbances) may drive them off long enough to harvest the crop. Fruit trees and bird feeder poles can be protected with conical metal guards that keep animals from climbing.

Their full article on Solving Problems With Raccoons is available here.

Why are we outsourcing the skatedot design-and-build to an out-of-state company? Here at home there are many contractors who can construct a skate feature (it's just laying concrete!) Moreover, maintenance is a phone call away. This is 2010, not 2006. The $55,000 should be going back into the LOCAL economy, not flowing out-of-Washington to Arizona (of all states)! Furthermore, what are the details of this design?

The Puget Sound Regional Archives would be an excellent place to order nice copies of the photos. They have the property record cards from 1936 or 1937 to 1972. You can contact them at: 425-564-3940. Their website is http://www.sos.wa.gov/archives/archives_puget.aspx. Please be aware that getting a print from the archives is not free.

Terrific post. I'd love to see some expansion on the details. Amazing to think of the transformation in so few years.

My father, Bert Swift Sr, used to be a greenskeeper at the Olympic Club, working four hours in the morning mowing greens, fixing divots, and seeding the fairways before he went off to work as a Linotype operator at the Seattle Times.

I used to caddy there while in junior high school. We recieved 35 cents for nine holes, or 50 cents for full eighteen. There were no golf carts, gas or electric in those days, and pull carts were rare.

In the winter, we sledded and skiid down the hills

Many thanks to Heidi Madden who researched and contributed this great article about the Golf Course. We're looking for historical photos of the golf course or the Army gun emplacement, or early life in Olympic Manor. If you've got something to share and add to the article, please contact dennis@crownhillneighbors.org

If you know of other Crown Hill stories, history, persons of interest, or want to suggest something which might be interesting to research and publish on the website, please contact me dennis@crownhillneighbors.org
