King County Metro Rapid Ride Coming to Crown Hill

King County’s Ballard-Uptown Rapid Ride Corridor will be located along 15th Ave NW through Ballard and Crown Hill. The RapidRide program was approved by voters in the 2006 Transit Now initiative to provide better, faster, and more convenient bus service.  The Ballard-Uptown Rapid Ride Advisory Committee recently recommended routing the corridor along 15th Ave NW rather than 24th Ave NW for the following reasons:

  • It’s the most direct route and a straight alignment heading downtown.
  • It features a higher degree of safety and lights that accommodate pedestrians.
  • Routing RapidRide on 15th Avenue NW keeps 24th Avenue NW safer for bicycles.
  • Signal prioritization will allow buses to travel faster.
  • Most survey respondents residing in all parts of Ballard selected the 15th Avenue NW option.
  • It serves Ballard High School.
  • It supports development along the 15th Avenue NW corridor.

More Fences at Crown Hill School Property

Many neighbors and other interested parties have noticed the second fence on the Crown HIll Elementary property – referring to the one in the baseball outfield. There is also a large trench inside the fence. This fenced off area is the temporary location of Fire Station 35.  The trucks and crew will be in the outfield until their new station is completed.

In order to maintain current service levels to the Crown Hill community, the fire station’s temporary location needed to be within 1/2 mile of its permanent home on 15th Ave NW.  The available options were limited.  Many locations were simply not large enough to meet the need. Several other commercial properties were ruled out because of driveway access not being compatible with fire engines.  Others, were ruled out because they were in the heart of residential areas or active school zones.

We fully expect, and are planning for, the park construction crews to meet the Fire Station Crew when they pack up to move into their new fire station.

Construction of Fire Station 35 is on track.  Construction of the new fire station will begin in about 30 to 40 days.

Representatives of the Fire Department will be at the Crown Hill Neighbors Annual Meeting on May 9 to discuss the construction of the  new fire station and its temporary home on the Crown Hill Park ball field until construction is complete.
