Tree Survey Question (still looking for responses)

In August 2009 we published a tree survey questionnaire here. We got quite a few responses, but we’re looking for more. Our grant proposal is currently being reviewed has been approved for funding by the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods. If approved, We will contract with an arborist to survey the neighborhood for trees, but Crown Hill is a large area to survey, and we can ensure the trees we think are significant are looked at by the arborist by identifying as many as possible ahead of time. We’ll be sponsoring a neighborhood walk in September 2010, and publishing a push-pin type map (similar to the one below) showing the trees.  Please take a look around and submit trees you think are significant whether they are in your yard, a neighbors yard, a public space. UPDATE (May 2010): Our grant proposal was approved for funding by the DON. The questionnaire is still open, so take a look at the updated map below and submit more trees. Thanks

Earth Hour, March 27th, 2010

Turn out your light, show support. Saturday March 27th, 2010, 8:30-9:30 PM

In 2009 hundreds of millions of people around the world showed their support by turning off their lights for one hour.

Earth Hour 2010 will continue to be a global call to action to every individual, every business and every community. A call to stand up, to show leadership and be responsible for our future.

Earth Day 2010 in Crown Hill

Crown Hill neighbors are urged to join the Earth Day event on April 17 in our neighborhood. Carkeek Park is setting up teams that will fan out on our streets surrounding the park and do three things: (1) stencil on storm drains the caution about dumping waste, (2) distribute one-page flyers to homes regarding pet waste, and (3) pick up trash along roadways and in public spaces.

What’s up with stenciling drains? There are over 100 storm drains in the Piper’s Creek watershed that send stormwater through the Park and into Puget Sound. Runoff from roads and gutters contributes lots of gunk to Puget Sound every year. Studies show that marking storm drains with the message “Dump No Waste, Drains to Stream” doubles community awareness.

Come to the Park’s Environmental Education Center at 8:30 a.m. to get matched up with a 3-5 person team, pick up supplies, and get your assignment of streets to cover. Just a few hours of work, then an Earth Day celebration with pizza at noon.  Bring work gloves and remember to dress for all sorts of weather.

It is helpful if you register in advance by calling 386-9154 to help Park staff figure appropriate numbers of stencils, trash bags, etc.

Classes at Swanson’s Nursery (Feb-Mar 2010)

Three great classes coming up at Swanson’s Nursery. The cold snap in December has probably kicked your cabin fever into high gear. Only problem is that was followed by record breaking warm weather in January which has you itching to get out in the yard. It’s still not safe to put in your spring garden, but our neighborhood nursery, Swanson’s has just the thing coming up in February. The first two seminars are put on by Laura Matter from Seattle Tilth (Planting your Edible Garden), and Crown Hill’s own Wendy Welch (Container Design). And we could use inspiration and help in selecting appropriate fruit trees for our yards. The seminars are FREE and no reservations are required.

Halloween Party in Crown Hill, October 24th, 2009

Come to the Third Annual Crown Hill Halloween Celebration. For kids of all ages (from 0-100) and adults too. Come in costume, prepared to feast with your neighbors. Bring something to share with everyone. Flashlight treasure hunt at 6:30. Please RSVP to halloween@sustainablecrownhill.org with the number of adults and kids so we can plan for the treasure hunt. Bring a flashlight.

The world famous Bucket Brigade (headquartered right here in [drumroll here] Crown Hill) will make a rare public appearance to entertain us with drumming and dancing. And, for all you closet drummers, there will be a fantastic chance to try out your rhythmic skills on the same buckets using the same drum sticks as the pros.
