Night Out celebrations, August 6, 2013

This year’s Night Out celebrations are slotted for August 6. Night Out is sponsored by the Seattle Police Department and is an opportunity to get to know your neighbors. There is nothing better than getting out on a warm August night, blocking off your street, and having a party with barbecue, grills, and great food provided by you and your neighbors.

Last year, Crown Hill had quite a number of parties. There was even one with a bouncy house and live music.  Other popular activities are bike rodeos, street art (chalk) contests, face painting, basketball,

If your block is not registered, you can register now (less than 3 minutes) at the Night Out Seattle website.

Signups are now open for the 7th Annual Crown Hill Neighbors Garage Sale!

Click on sign to see this year’s map.

UPDATE: signups are now closed. The map is available here: http://crownhillneighbors.org/gsale/

Sign up today!  The 7th Annual Crown Hill Neighborhood Garage Sale is happening on Saturday, July 27th, 2013.

UPDATE: Crown Hill United Methodist Church (14th and 85th) will be participating and has generously offered tables (at no charge) to folk who don’t have a garage or yard they can use. These tables are on a first come, first served basis, and you need to sign up in advance, by calling the church office on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday between 1:30 and 4:30. The church phone # is 206-784-2387.

It’s not too early to be thinking about what you’ll be selling. You’ve probably been tripping over it for months now. Remember what’s junk to you is likely going to be someone else’s treasure!

Last year we had more than 55 participating households, and folks moved a lot of stuff out of their houses and garages on to new owners. It was a great opportunity to talk to neighbors, to cruise other sales, and maybe score a couple of prize finds.

As always, we encourage young entrepreneurs (of all ages) to set up lemonade and cookie stands.

We have an online map and there will be printed maps on the day of the sale.

Sign up here, and happy garage sale-ing!

From the press release:

It’s time to celebrate the
Think Green
Recycling Challenge

  • Six months ago, Waste Management challenged ten Seattle communities to reduce their waste by encouraging neighbors to work together to recycle more and model waste reduction activities. Neighborhoods performed recycling carols, organized Halloween costume exchanges, and wrote about why they love recycling.
  • We are proud to honor the four winning neighborhoods of this year’s Think Green Recycling Challenge.
  • Our Wednesday North neighborhood (Crown Hill/Greenwood) is the grand prize winner for their efforts to decrease the overall amount of garbage sent to the landfill. They will receive $40,000 to donate to the non-profit(s) of their choice.
  • With their spirited community outreach, Tuesday North (Ballard), Wednesday South (South Park/Georgetown/Delridge), and Friday North (Wallingford/Green Lake) earned $3,300 each to donate to a local non-profit of their choice.
  • Each of the ten communities has something to be proud of: the average increase in diversion rate –the amount of material kept out of the landfill — increased 1% across all competing neighborhoods, and collectively the neighborhoods composted and recycled over 3,000 tons more than the previous year!

Join us to celebrate the outstanding efforts of this year’s Think Green Recycling Challenge four winning neighborhoods:
