Residential Burglaries

It looks as though the Crown Hill (and Ballard) area has suffered a spate of residential burglaries in the last month (March 18th to April 18th, 2011). Just this afternoon (Monday), a neighbor on 12th (97xx block) surprised a burglar in his home. The neighbor pursued and caught the burglar on foot and was able to retrieve the burglar’s backpack in the ensuing struggle before the individual ran off.

UPDATE 04/19/2011: The Seattle PI website has more details on the likely perpetrator of Monday’s attempted burglary: http://www.seattlepi.com/local/article/Police-investigating-North-Seattle-burglary-1344246.php Please note that as of 04/19, the individual is NOT in custody, and has NOT been arrested in conjunction with the attempted burglary.

The map for Crown Hill over the last month looks like this screen shot snagged from the SPD Police Reports website. The burglaries are in green with a star-burst which resembles broken glass:

Normally Crown Hill is a fairly quiet enclave in the city of Seattle. Likely these crimes are the work of a small number of individuals who are moving through the neighborhood. Steps you can take to cut this crime spree short:

Break-ins in the neighborhood ….

We’ve had a number of thefts, break-ins, property damage/vandalism/graffiti incidents  in the last several months. Just when it seemed to be settling down we received word of yet another break-in and theft:

Just wanted to let my neighbors know
That our outdoor shed was recently robbed. Gas leaf blower, weed wacker &
Hedge trimmer. @$700 worth . We live on 96th ave nw in between

Certain types of crime can be reported online, and information on that is available here. Maps of crimes can  be seen here. Online police reports are available here.

Robbery on Holman Road, March 28th, 2011

Approximately 4 AM Monday Morning, March 28th 2011, the owner of the Thirsty Fish at 9041 Holman Road was beaten and robbed.  Details of the incident are available at the MyBallard site.  The robbers got away with a bag of money, his wedding ring, and wallet.

In light of this incident and the earlier robbery at Whitman Middle School, I’m taking this opportunity to remind every one to:

  • be extra attentive to your surroundings
  • not be distracted by electronic gadgetry such as phones, music players, etc. while in public situations
  • be alert to suspicious activity in the area and to report the activity using 911
  • vary your routines to thwart those who may be casing you or your property
  • walk in well lighted areas
  • walk with a friend or partner rather than alone
  • report any relevant information to the police

Armed Robbery at Whitman Middle School, March 3rd, 2011

On March 3rd, a woman waiting in her car for her kids to be finished with basketball practice, was accosted by a lone man with a gun who robbed her of cash, then fled across the play field when she activated her car alarm. Police searched the area but did not locate the robber. On March 8th, the Seattle Police Department apprehended a suspect in the case and a string of other armed robberies. The suspect is being held at King County Jail on $100,000 bail until Friday March 11th, the deadline for the Prosecutor to file charges.

Extra caution is advised even though a suspect is in custody.  In the other incidents, there were additional robbers. Always good to be aware of your surroundings in public areas, rather than absorbed in electronic devices. It is also a good idea to not be alone.

Below are links to stories from news sources and the SPD about the robbery and suspect apprehension:
