Neighborhood Matching Fund Grant Mary Ave North of 100th

A group of neighbors riding on the coattails of the Walkable Crown Hill Project recently received a City of Seattle Neighborhood Matching Fund grant to make some streetscape improvements for both walkability and improved appearance. The neighbors live on the dead end of Mary Ave NW, north of NW 100th Street. The grant was approved for approximately $4500.

OUR CROWN HILL Question #2 Wishes for the QFC building

The results are in for question #2, “If you could grant one wish for the QFC building (8532 15th Ave NW) what would you like to see there?”   By far, neighbors in Crown Hill wish most for a community grocery store, an alternative to Safeway they can walk to.  Topping the list were either a PCC (Puget Consumers Co-op) or Greenwood Market (possibly renamed Crown Hill Market?).  Other stores on the wish list were a natural food store, Queen Anne Thriftway, Metropolitan Market, Whole Foods, and Trader Joe’s.  The most local sustainable wish was for a big greenhouse/farmer’s market as it would employ farmers and marketers, contribute taxes, have zero transportation costs for the food, and generate  solar energy!! Win, Win, Win.  Now if there were a developer…

Indoor recreation activities were another big category.  A good wish for rainy Seattle.  Five people are wishing for … a bowling alley!  Other recreation desires include  a roller skating rink, play area for kids (that’s profitable), and a gym.  Another idea was for community center that focuses on teens (check out the Kirkland Teen Urban Building www.ktub.org) or a community center with a coffee shop.  Someone else is wishing for more park space.

Several wishes were for restaurants, for example a neighborhood pub, a bar with cheap food, or  really good Chinese food (yum!);  more retail options; either artist lofts with a store front or condos with retail below; and in general changes that would clean up the area.  Interestingly, one idea was that the increased density would make the neighborhood more lively and support the local retail.  Another wish was for definitely no condos.

Below are everyone’s wishes:

ARC Dance Summer At The Center, July 15-17, 2010

From ARC Dance:

Arc Poster Summer At The Center

There will be five new world premiers by choreographers from Mark Morris Dance Group, Whim Whim, and PNB, as well as Marie Chong, Artistic Director of ARC, and Betsy Cooper, resident choreographer for ARC.  Our ten professional dancers have been working very hard to learn and perfect the dances.  The dances are fun and thought provoking; the dancers are exciting and strong.

The Bite of Seattle is happening at the Center Friday and Saturday.  This is a perfect opportunity to enjoy Seattle, get a bite to eat, and then settle in for an intimate night of dance.  The Leo K Theater is large enough to hold our company, and yet small enough for you to be up close and personal with the dancers.

You can find information about ARC, choreographer and dancer bios, and ticket purchase at our web site www.arcdance.org.  Don’t miss out on the best summer dance in Seattle!

Fire Station 35 Ground-breaking, August 21st, 2009

Fire Station 35 at 8729 15th Ave NW will be demolished to make way for a brand new fire station. The building is currently home to an engine company and a “reserve engine”. It was originally built in 1920, and is in need of replacement. The citizens of Seattle passed the Fire Facilities and Emergency Response Levy in November 2003 to fund the upgrading, renovation, and replacement of 32 fire stations across the city, including Fire Station 35.  The new station will be two stories, have bays for 3 vehicles, and will be completely up to date with the latest seismic safety codes.
